Weather forces sports teams to adjust

Mother Nature was not very cooperative when some Xavier Prep athletic teams wanted to participate in a few recent competitions. Here is a look at what transpired:

Mountain biking

The XCP/Brophy Prep combined club mountain biking team was to ride in an event on Sunday (Oct. 6) in the third of the Arizona Interscholastic Cycling League’s five-race season, but the race was canceled at the Wren Arena in Fort Huachuca, near Tucson.

The race apparently will not be made up, so the season will continue with its next race, on Oct. 21 at the McDowell Mountain Regional Park in Fountain Hills. The final race of the season will be held Nov. 4 at the White Tank Mountain Regional Park in the far west Valley community of Waddell.

Golf

XCP was to face Phoenix Pinnacle on Oct. 2 at the Tatum Ranch Golf Club in north Phoenix, but the event was washed out. Also, another match with Phoenix Horizon and Cave Creek Cactus Shadows on Monday (Oct. 8) at the Camelback Golf Club Padre Course in Paradise Valley was postponed.

Those two matches now will be combined in what will be a sneak peek at teams that figure to challenge for state titles in a few weeks.

Xavier will play host to Pinnacle, Horizon and Cactus Shadows at 3 p.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 10) at the Kierland Golf Club in Scottsdale.

The Gators won the Division I state title last season and Cactus Shadows finished on top in the Division II race. Pinnacle was tied for third in Division I and Horizon was fifth.

The Division I and II state tournaments will be back at the Omni Tucson National Resort on Oct. 29 and 30. The tournaments were held there last season. Xavier won the Nighthawk Invitational there earlier this season and recently played a practice round there.

This week’s schedule

Other Xavier teams are back in action.

*The badminton team will travel to Glendale Mountain Ridge for a match on Tuesday (Oct. 9).

*The cross-country team will run in the Titan Invitational at Crossroads Park in Gilbert on Friday (Oct. 12).

*The freshman tennis “A” and “B’’ teams will meet Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep, the “A’’ team on the road on Tuesday and the “B” team at home on Thursday (Oct. 11).

*The swim-dive team will travel to Chandler High for a meet on Thursday.

*And the volleyball team will play twice, on Tuesday at Phoenix Desert Vista in Ahwatukee and at home against Chandler Hamilton in the Activity Center on Wednesday.
