It’s a new season of sports competition.
And come to think of it, I am new, too!
After writing about sports for more than three decades for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette
and other publications, I have joined the Xavier College Preparatory staff as a
“sports media specialist.’’
That means you will see me at many of the school’s sporting
events, and will be able to read about them and other subjects in this space. I
also will be writing feature stories on the individual athletes and coaches,
and even taking a few photos.
I look forward to volleyball, golf, cross country,
badminton, and swimming and diving in the new pool at neighboring Brophy
College Preparatory. Not just varsity, but all levels.
And if you enter the spacious lobby of the wonderful new
addition to the gymnasium, you will see video monitor displays of the various
teams and Great Gators of the past. I also will be assisting with that project.
I take my job seriously, but I also want to have fun at the
same time. That’s what sports are all about.
I have enjoyed coming to Xavier in the past to cover events
for the newspapers and, most recently, as a writer for the Arizona
Interscholastic Association Web site. Sr. Lynn Winsor, the athletic director
and golf coach, and Sr. Nancy Perlick, her assistant, have made me feel more
than welcome. The coaches also have been very cooperative and professional.
It takes every ounce of energy for a person to keep up with
Sr. Lynn, who always seems to be in a million places at once.
With the dedication of the athletes to their sport as well
as academics on a daily basis, it is no surprise that XCP has been able to
generate so much success.
More of it is sure to come, and I’m ready to witness it
first-hand.
I will see you around, and Go Gators!!
