DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Badminton, freshman tennis teams triumph

The XCP badminton team had a strong showing at the Sunnyslope Invitational tournament on Saturday (Sept. 13) and the freshman tennis team was on top of its game again on Thursday (Sept. 11) with a 9-0 rout of Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep.
Kirielle Singarajah was responsible for two of the Gators’ badminton wins, taking her individual match and capturing the doubles with partner Laura Pearl.
Other individual winners for Xavier were Mallory Belknap, Maisie Porter and Katie Russell.
The badminton team was to have a quick turnaround. The Gators returned to action on Monday (Sept. 15) at Chandler High and is due to have two more matches this week, at home against Tempe High on Wednesday (Sept. 17) and on the road at Mesa Westwood on Thursday (Sept. 18).

The freshmen play back-to-back matches on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, at Chandler Hamilton and home against Chandler Basha.
