The Xavier teams in volleyball, badminton and freshman
tennis are busy this week. All won on Tuesday (Sept. 9), with more matches
scheduled Wednesday (Sept. 10) and Thursday (Sept. 11).
Volleyball rolled to a three-game sweep of visiting Mesa
Desert Ridge, 25-10, 25-12 and 25-14.
The junior-varsity and freshman teams also won. JV scores
were 25-10 and 25-14 and freshman scores were 25-10 and 25-15.
The Gators were due to hit the road for the first time on
Wednesday, at Gilbert Highland, and follow that up with another road match at
Phoenix Desert Vista in Ahwatukee. Match times are 4 p.m. (freshmen), 5 (JV)
and 6 (varsity).
The varsity and JV badminton squads won at Phoenix
Sunnyslope by identical 8-1 scores.
Badminton teams were at home on Wednesday against Highland,
with a road match on Thursday at Scottsdale Saguaro and participation in the
Sunnyslope Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 13).
The freshman tennis team picked up a 9-0 win over visiting
Tempe Marcos de Niza. Xavier recorded
several points via default.
In singles matches, XCP’s Sophie Schumacher defeated Marcos
de Niza’s Alyssa Matus 8-3, XCP’s Katie Shyman defeated Marcos de Niza’s Miriam
Swanson 8-6 and XCP’s Amelia Connelley defeated Marcos de Niza’s Monica Davis
6-5 (7-5 tiebreaker).
In doubles, Xavier’s Tia Kelly and Rebecca Cardon defeated
Marcos de Niza’s Matus and Swanson 8-5.
The freshman were due to return to the court on Wednesday at
Chandler High, then coming back for a home match on Thursday at Scottsdale
Notre Dame Prep.
