DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Gator frosh tennis wins after dropping opener

Madeline Corely was victorious in singles for the second time in as many matches and she teamed with Caroline Armknecht to win a second straight doubles match as Xavier’s freshman tennis team rebounded from an opening-match loss to Chandler Hamilton to win on the road at Gilbert Perry on Thursday 9-0.
Corely and Armknecht won their singles matches by shoutout, and Xavier won four other contests by 8-1 scores.
The Gators return to action on Sept. 9 with a home match against Tempe Marcos de Niza.
