Gator runners have good night vision

The cross-country team from Xavier Prep brightened up its Saturday night (Sept. 20) with a strong finish in the Woodbridge Invitational at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif.
Yes, you are reading correctly – the runners competed at night – a rare occasion.
Out of 244 teams and about 10,000 runners, the Gators finished ninth in the elite team race, 12th overall  and had two girls finish in the top 100 individuals.
They were Jane Miller (56th) at 17:33 and Shannon Molvin (92nd) at 17:42.
“The girls ran great. We had two teams of seven,’’ said Xavier coach Dave Van Sickle.
The Gators left Phoenix at around 9 a.m. on Saturday, arrived in southern California at around 3 p.m. and rested at their hotel until race time.
“Everything worked out pretty well. You don’t have a Saturday night meet very often,’’ Van Sickle said.
Phoenix Desert Vista (Ahwatukee) finished second overall.
XCP will compete next in the annual Doug Conley Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 27). The event features some of the top teams around the state and will be held at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tempe.
