Xavier’s defending Division I state volleyball champions
went up against some of the best teams in the West on Friday (Sept. 19) and
Saturday (Sept. 20) at the Diablo Invitational at Durango High in Las Vegas,
and came back home to Phoenix after winning five of seven matches.
The Gators finished 13th out of 64 teams.
“The competition was far superior to what is in Arizona, so
it was good for us to get that experience,’’ said XCP coach Lamar-Renee Bryant.
“We learned how to compete while facing adversity. Our
service and passing were better, and our setting and defense were the most
improved.’’
Xavier defeated Saddleback (Calif.), Lehi (Utah), Thousand
Oaks (Calif.), La Costa Canyon (Calif.) and Campolindo (Calif.). The Gators
lost to Kamehameha (Hawaii) and Marymount (Calif.).
Xavier has a big match on Tuesday night (Sept. 23) at
Gilbert High, a perennial state title contender.
