Seniors shine in final volleyball home match

In XCP’s final home volleyball match of the season on Tuesday (Oct. 21), it was a special night for the team’s two outgoing seniors, Kate Even and Molly Scheel.
Even and Scheel played key roles for the Gators in their 25-8, 25-14, 25-12 sweep of Mesa Red Mountain.
Scheel played a fine all-around match and Even had a strong game at the net with some of her kills and blocks.
Xavier played without junior outside hitter Khalia Lanier, who went home prior to the start of the match while feeling a bit under the weather.
Red Mountain is a talented team but very young, and struggled from the beginning.
Xavier went on an 8-0 run to begin the first game, and Scheel had five of the points with service aces. The Gators wrapped up the game with a kill by sophomore McKenna Patterson.
Red Mountain was a bit more competitive at the start of Game #2, but Xavier took control and won going away, finishing it off with another ace by Scheel.
Scheel had four more aces in Game #3.
“It was good that our seniors were able to play well, to go out on a strong note in their last home match (regular season),’’ said XCP coach Lamar-Renee Bryant.
The coach also thought it was important that freshman Alyna Draper was able to see some playing time at libero. Junior Kristen Largay is the top player at that spot.
Xavier finishes the regular season with three road matches – at Phoenix North on Thursday (Oct. 23), at Mesa Skyline on Oct. 27 and at Mesa Westwood on Oct. 28.
