The new year began on Tuesday (Jan. 6) with a big victory
for Xavier Prep’s soccer team and the Gators were able to reclaim the top spot
in azcentral’s Division I rankings.
The Gators rolled past visiting Phoenix Camelback 17-0 in a
match that was moved up two hours from its original 6 p.m. start.
Camelback had trouble fielding a full varsity team for
various reasons, so the remaining varsity players combined with the junior
varsity squad to face the Xavier varsity.
Xavier, whose record improved to 6-1, got an opportunity to
use many of its reserves and get them valuable experience that could come into
play at key moments later on in the season.
Gators coach Barb Chura hopes her team will be ready to play
fourth-ranked Phoenix Desert Vista of Ahwatukee on Wednesday (Jan. 7) at
Xavier’s Petznick Field. The game begins at 6 p.m.
