Tennis coach Martin honored again

Xavier Prep has harvested another athletics honor with the selection of tennis coach Laurie Martin by Tennis Industry magazine as its national High School Coach of the Year for 2014.
One of the most prominent factors in the selection was Martin’s no-cut policy in regard to the freshman program in the fall. Martin also coaches the XCP varsity and has won three straight Division I championships.
Martin previously was named to the U.S. Tennis Association’s No-Cut All-Star coaches team.
“Laurie’s ability to maintain a high school girls tennis program with so many student-athletes is nothing short of remarkable,’’ Glenn Arrington told the magazine. He is the USTA’s national manager for high school tennis.
Martin guided 60 freshmen last fall. The freshman players are placed into groups that are color-coded. Teams practice two or three times a week and the freshmen have two or three matches per week against area schools.
Congratulations, Laurie, on a job well done!!
