Led by two-time singles state champion Madison Clarke, the
Xavier tennis team captured the Kiwanis Invitational tournament over the
weekend at the Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale.
The Gators were first, followed by Scottsdale Notre Dame
Prep, Chandler Hamilton, Phoenix Horizon and Gilbert Mesquite.
Clark won her title match against a player from Notre Dame
6-0, 6-0.
Xavier’s Caroline Armknecht did a great job in singles for
the Gators, filling in for Amy Aiken, who was ill. Armknecht won a pair of
matches before falling to the Notre Dame player who finished as runner-up.
In doubles, it was an all-Xavier final as Scarlet Rush and
Anne Marie Cousins defeated Caroline James and Jordan Craft 6-2, 6-4.
The Gators return to the court on Tuesday (March 10) with a
home match at the Stark Tennis Center against Goodyear Millennium.
