Quick goals by Gator lacrosse turn things around

Xavier lacrosse coach Caitlin Bebout knew that Friday night’s (March 6) game against visiting Phoenix Horizon “would be all about momentum.’’
What she didn’t count on was that it would be Horizon that would have that momentum in the early going. The Huskies grabbed a 3-0 lead.
Then in the blink of an eye – within 31 seconds, to be exact – the score was tied at 3 after the Gators threw caution to the wind and scored three times.
Xavier scored four more goals before Horizon could get back on the board, and now it was the Gators who had the momentum. And even though the Huskies made several comeback attempts, Xavier managed to hold on for a 14-10 victory and ran their record to 3-1. The teams will meet again on March 13 at Horizon.
Senior Areta Buness was at her best for Xavier, scoring six goals and showing why Stanford signed her to play next year.
“She is small compared to some players, but she is very fast, particularly off the draw (at the center of the field,’’ Bebout said.
It had been a week since Xavier’s previous game, and Bebout said her team had been working hard and needed a bit of rest and a bit of refocus following a loss to Scottsdale Chaparral.
“We wanted to play smart and be everywhere on the field,’’ she said.
Katie Hobaica, Therese Knapp and Kayla Swanson each scored twice for Xavier, and Katie Russell and Caylie Wagner each scored single goals to aid the cause.
