If Xavier’s new head varsity basketball coach looks a bit familiar,
there is a reason.
Stephen Moss coached the Gators for part of the 2014-15
season, starting the year at the freshman and junior-varsity levels and taking
over the varsity on an interim basis at mid-season when some changes were made
at that level.
He guided XCP to the brink of the Division I playoffs
despite the fact that the team had to endure some injuries to key players.
According to Xavier Athletic Director Sr. Lynn Winsor, the
hiring committee received 19 applications for the position, screened the
applications and interviewed five candidates.
Moss’ experience and willingness to spend an extended amount
of time rebuilding the entire basketball program were some of the reasons he
was offered the position, Winsor said.
With Moss leading the way, Xavier will host a summer
basketball camp, have two or three summer-league teams and offer open-gym
programs during the school year. The seventh-period basketball PE class also
will be continued.
