If Mesa Dobson High’s softball team wanted to get Xavier
Prep’s attention on Friday night (April 17), the visiting Mustangs accomplished
their goal.
Dobson did it by scoring in the top of the first inning for
a 1-0 lead. Top-ranked Xavier got the run back in its half of the first and
broke the game open with seven in the second on the way to an 11-1 victory that
was shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.
The win enabled XCP to reach the 20-victory level at 20-4,
while Dobson fell to 8-17.
Sam Sydenham cleared the bases with a bases-loaded double
and Melissa Fedorka and Becky Ducar each hit two-run doubles to send the Gators
on their way.
Amanda Preach and Mallory Belknap each drove in a run in a
two-run third inning. And Xavier secured
the win in the fifth when Belknap led off with a single, advanced to second on
a walk to Megan Donahey, went to third on a forceout and scored on a wild
pitch.
Caitlyn Dickman pitched the victory for Xavier, giving up
just four hits, only one after the first inning.
Xavier returns to action on Tuesday (April 21) with a 7 p.m.
game at Petznick Field against Scottsdale Chaparral.
