“One to go.’’
Coach Laurie Martin was matter of fact in her assessment of the Xavier Prep tennis team in the 2015 Division I state team tennis tournament.
Martin and the Gators are not taking anything for granted as they attempt to win their fourth consecutive title on Saturday (May 9) at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.
Top-seeded Xavier was in control most of the way in Friday’s (May 8) semifinal, defeating No. 5 Scottsdale Chaparral 5-0 at Scottsdale Ranch Park.
This last match perhaps could be the toughest as the Gators face second-seeded Mesa Mountain View, which advanced with a win over Phoenix Desert Vista.
Mountain View took Xavier to the limit before the Gators prevailed 5-4 in a midseason match at Xavier.
Mountain View features Anya and Madeline Lamoreaux, freshman twins who are among the rising stars in Arizona.
“They are young, they are solid throughout their lineup and they are hungry,’’ Martin said. “We take them very seriously. The first time we played them, there were a lot of matches that could have gone either way.’’
Her advice to the Gators as they prepared to board the bus afterward on Friday: “Get your rest and make sure you stay hydrated.’’
Xavier will be counting on three seniors to bring another trophy home.
Madison Clarke was the No. 1 singles player in the state, winning her third straight individual crown last week. Scarlet Rush has been strong in singles and doubles, as has Anne Marie Collins.
“Every single point we get out there is just as important as another,’’ Martin said.
Madison Clarke (X) def. Rebecca Salaway (C), 6-0, 6-1.
Emily Akin (X) def. Aubrey Tulley (C), 6-0, 6-0.
Caroline James (X) def. Aubrie Bailie (C), 6-4, 6-3.
Jordan Craft (X) def. Gabie Dibricov (C), 6-3, 6-1.
Anne Marie Collins (X) def. Victoria Franco (C), 6-1, 6-1.
*Xavier played a sixth singles match, Scarlet Rush vs. Grace Koester. Rush dropped the first set but came back to take the second set and gained valuable momentum going into the third before it was announced that Xavier had clinched the match.
