DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for AIA365.com, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Track, team tennis have dates at state



State-tournament events continue for Xavier spring sports teams this week.
The track and field team will be at Mesa Community College on Wednesday (May 6) for the first round of competition in the Division I state meet. Field events begin at 1:15 p.m., running events at 3.
Athletes will return to MCC on Saturday (May 9) for the finals.
In team tennis, top-seeded Xavier will host a second-round match against No. 8 Phoenix Pinnacle on Wednesday. The match was originally scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., but testing at XCP caused the match to be moved back to 4:30 p.m.
Xavier, the three-time defending Division I champion, would advance to Friday’s (May 8) semifinals with a win over Pinnacle. Friday’s noon match will be held at Scottsdale Ranch Park, 105th St. and Via Linda.
