DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for AIA365.com, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Xavier in team tennis semis; more track on Saturday



Top-seeded Xavier Prep chalked up another tennis victory on Wednesday by defeating No. 8 Phoenix Pinnacle 5-0 in the Division I state team tournament at XCP.
Xavier advances to Friday’s (May 9) semifinals and will face No. 5 Scottsdale Chaparral at noon at Scottsdale Ranch Park, 105th St. and Via Linda. The other semifinal will feature No. 2 Mesa Mountain View and No. 3 Phoenix Desert Vista.
Also, the Division I track and field state meet will continue at Mesa Community College. Preliminaries were held Wednesday. Field events finals begin at 1 p.m., running events at 3 p.m.
