There are honors and there are really big honors like the
one announced by the National High School Coaches Association on Monday (June
1).
The group named long-time Xavier College Prep coach Laurie
Martin as its national Girls Tennis Coach of the Year.
Martin led the Gators to their fourth straight Division I team
title in Arizona with a recent victory over Mesa Mountain View. Xavier’s top player
was three-time Division I state champion Madison Clarke.
Martin also earned notoriety with the NHSCA and Coach of the
Year designations in other organizations with her “no-cut’’ policy. It begins
each fall with the freshmen and continues through the junior-varsity and
varsity levels. That gives everybody a chance to learn the game and gain
hands-on experience.
Congratulations, Coach Martin! Well deserved!
