DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for AIA365.com, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Lanier helps Americans advance in volleyball



Xavier Prep senior outside hitter Khalia Lanier scored 10 points on eight kills and two blocks to help spark the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team to a three-game sweep of Belgium on Tuesday (Aug. 11) and finished second in Pool C of the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship in Lima, Peru.
The Americans were 3-1 in pool play and finished second to Russia, which went 4-0. The Americans have qualified for the Eight Finals Round that features the top 16 teams in the tournament with the playoffs beginning on Thursday (Aug. 13). Turkey will be the first opponent at 2 p.m., Arizona time.
The eight first-round winners will advance to the quarterfinal round in the goal-medal bracket.
