Lanier, U.S. top Germany, reach volleyball semis

Xavier Prep senior outside hitter Khalia Lanier and her teammates from the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team advanced to the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship semifinals in Lima, Peru with a three-set sweep of Germany in the quarterfinals on Friday (Aug. 14).
The U.S. team, which defeated Germany 25-19, 25-11 and 25-20, will face China on Saturday (Aug. 15) in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m., Arizona time. The winner plays for the tournament title on Sunday night (Aug. 16), and the loser plays in a consolation game earlier on Sunday.
Lanier scored 10 points (eight kills and two aces) against Germany.
China defeated Russia in three sets in a quarterfinal match on Friday. Russia had defeated the U.S. team in five sets in Pool play earlier in the tournament.
The Americans defeated Brazil 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15) to advance to the quarterfinals against Germany. Lanier led the way by scoring 18 points on 13 kills, four blocks and an ace.
