Quest for volleyball title falls short for Lanier, U.S.

The road to a championship came to a disappointing end for Xavier Prep senior outside hitter Khalia Lanier and the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team on Sunday night (Aug. 16) as the Red, White and Blue fell to Italy in three straight sets in the title match of the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship in Lima, Peru.
The Americans fell by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-16 to earn their second straight Silver Medal. They had a 6-2 record in the tournament, losing to only Italy and Russia.
The U.S. used a big effort in Saturday’s (Aug. 15) semifinals to turn back defending champion China 3-1. Those scores were 25-18, 25-13, 27-29 and 25-18.
The 6-foot-2 Lanier accounted for 13 points in the win over China, on 12 kills and a block.
