Xavier’s cross-country team finished ninth out of 30 teams in the Open Division of Saturday’s (Sept. 26) 43rd annual Doug Conley Invitational.
The event was moved to Shalimar Golf Course in Tempe after being held in previous years at the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tempe. Approximately 2,000 runners representing schools from around the state participated. There were six total divisions, three girls and three boys.
The top finisher for the Gators over the three-mile course was senior Ally Novacek, who had a time of 20:28.86 and finished in the 18th spot.
Other XCP runners: junior M.J. O’Gara 26th (20:42.86), sophomore Kate Straneva 33rd (20:53.65), sophomore Annika Nielson 91st (22:14.17), freshman Karina Hawkins 93rd (22:29.80), and junior Pamela Ebenroth 96th (22:36.71).
Phoenix Mountain Pointe won the Open Division, followed by Mesa Red Mountain, Phoenix Desert Vista, Tucson Rincon, Cave Creek Cactus Shadows, Gilbert Mesquite, Tempe, Phoenix North Canyon and Xavier. Chandler High won the girls’ Elite Division.
Xavier will run next in the meet that will serve as the primary measuring stick for teams as they head toward their respective state meets later in October.
The Desert Twilight Invitational will be held Friday (Oct. 2) at the Arizona Grande Sports World Complex in Casa Grande.
