With most of its leading runners rested after they sat out of last week’s Doug Conley Invitational, Xavier’s cross-country team came up with a strong third-place finish in Friday’s (Oct. 2) in the Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival and the Arizona Grande Sports World Complex in Casa Grande.
The event featured 30 teams and more than 180 runners.
Phoenix Desert Vista earned the team title with 75 points, followed by Air Academy (Colo.) with 93 and Xavier with 98.
Junior Sarah Carter was the top runner for XCP, finishing in third place in the 5,000-meter distance with a time of 17:26.50.
The Gators had a second runner finish in the top 10, and that was senior Jane Miller, who was ninth with a time of 17:59.20.
Other Xavier runners: senior Tessa Weiss 25th (18:28.10), sophomore Caroline Liddy 39th (18:46.70), freshman Helen Innes 40th (18:48.30), sophomore Caroline McClelland 67th (19:26.90) and senior Shannan Higgins 68th (19:27.90).
Xavier’s final meet of the regular season will be the Titan Invitational at Crossroads Park in Gilbert. That park also will be the site of the regional/sectional event on Oct. 30.
The state meet will return to the Cave Creek Golf Course in north Phoenix on Nov. 7.
