Frosh tennis completes another strong season

Another freshman tennis season at Xavier Prep recently was completed, and the sport seems to be more popular than ever.
About 90 players participated in coach Laurie Martin’s no-cut program, and most of them were still going strong at the end. The expanded list meant two teams for the Gators, the Blue and the White, and they alternated matches most of the season. The Blue was 11-0 and the White was 9-1.
“It was nice to see the girls get comfortable with the sport. They kept coming back to learn more,’’ Martin said.
The coach added that “there was a wide range of abilities. The beginners were able to participate in rallies and the more advanced players learned to control their shots better. Everybody was able to relax and gain more confidence.’’
The number of players proved to be a challenge for Martin and her assistant coaches to monitor, “but I think it worked out pretty well and most of the players felt they had a good experience.’’
Martin hopes that this year’s success will translate into another large turnout for the freshmen in 2016.
Good job, Gators !!
