State badminton singles, doubles begin for Gators

Xavier senior Kirielle Singarajah is the No. 3-seeded singles player in the state badminton tournament that begins Friday (Oct. 23) and continues Saturday (Oct. 24) at Independence High in Glendale.
Singarajah could play as many as three matches on Friday. If she wins all three, she will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Singarajah will face unseeded Amber Mancera of Phoenix Paradise Valley in the opening round.
The top two singles seeds are No. 1 Karen Guo of Phoenix Desert Vista, the defending state champion, and No. 2 Makaila Mason of Phoenix Greenway.
Xavier also has a doubles team seeded in the top eight. That would be the No. 6 seed, junior Tatum Clarke and senior Laura Pearl. They will meet a duo from Laveen Cesar Chavez, Garcia and Rosales (no first names available).
A second doubles team also will compete for Xavier. That is unseeded senior Sydney LaPierre and junior Emijly Woodrow. They will take on Goodyear Millennium’s Madi Wright and Veronica Nieborek.
The team portion of the tournament will be held next week. The Gators have won two straight titles and three of the last four.
