The Xavier Prep volleyball team capped a grueling weekend by
finishing as runner-up of the Gold Division in the Nike Tournament of Champions
on Saturday (Oct. 3) at the Kroc Center in Phoenix.
The Gators finished the tournament with a 4-3 record and
fell to Gilbert High, 25-17, 21-25 and 15-12 in the division finale. Xavier
(now 18-5 overall) had defeated Gilbert in five sets on Sept. 24, and will play
in the Gilbert Invitational Oct. 16-17.
Xavier began the Nike event with a victory over Pleasant
Valley of Chico, Calif. The Gators then fell to Phoenix Mountain Pointe in
three sets and defeated Yerington, Nev.
The Gators were tripped up by PK Yonge of Gainesville, Fla.,
in their first match on Saturday. They defeated Goodyear Millennium and
Lewis-Palmer of Monument, Colo., to reach the Gold title match against Gilbert.
XCP has two matches this coming week – on the road against
Peoria Liberty on Tuesday (Oct. 6) and Thursday (Oct. 8) at home against Mesa
Red Mountain.
