XCP volleyball hopes health issues are in the past

Slowly but surely, Xavier’s Gators are returning to being a complete volleyball team.
Coach Lamar-Renee Bryant’s girls have been beset by injuries and illness, so coming back together is a good sign as the team approaches the final few weeks of the regular season and playoffs.
Xavier traveled to Peoria Centennial on Wednesday (Oct. 14) and returned home with a three-game sweep of the Coyotes, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-17 to raise its overall record to 21-5.
“We are getting healthy again,’’ Bryant said.
Against Centennial, Emma Gelinas had five kills in eight attempts with no errors. Khalia Lanier had 21 kills. Libero Kristen Largay had 28 digs and one kill.
On Friday (Oct. 16), the Gators will begin play in the two-day Gilbert Invitational that features many of the teams expected to challenge for the Division I state championship.
In addition to XCP, the field includes host Gilbert High, Chandler Basha, Phoenix Sunnyslope, Tempe Corona del Sol, Phoenix Horizon, Phoenix Mountain Pointe and Chandler Hamilton.
Xavier will play four matches on Friday and three on Saturday (Oct. 17). Matches will be shortened to a best of three games instead of the usual best of five.
