Shot, wide. Shot, high. Shot, save.
Kick after kick, the Xavier Prep soccer team was close to
scoring goals in the first half of Wednesday night’s (Jan. 13) game against
visiting Phoenix Horizon, but the Gators had nothing to show for it in a
scoreless tie.
You got the idea that if the Gators continued to shoot, the
odds would turn in their favor and the ball would find the back of the net.
Finally, about six minutes into the second half, Xavier came
through with a goal by senior Lex Allard. Freshman Emily Chiao added another
score with 4:04 left in the contest, and XCP went on to record a 2-0 triumph.
Xavier raised its record to 11-2. After a hard-nosed effort
by Horizon, the Huskies slipped to 3-7.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kinsey Ehmann had another strong effort
for the Gators, trading saves with her Horizon counterpart.
With about 15 minutes left in the game, Horizon appeared
that it was on the way to tying it up but Ehmann leaped and tipped the ball
just over the goal for the save.
A few minutes later, Horizon made another push and had a
good chance to score on a header, but Ehmann tipped the ball back and over the
goal again.
Xavier returns to action with a pair of road games next
week, on Tuesday (Jan. 19) at Phoenix Desert Vista and Friday (Jan. 22) at Scottsdale
Chaparral. The Gators have only one more regular-season home game before the
start of the Division I state tournament, and that is Jan. 25 against Phoenix
Sandra Day O’Connor.
