It was the type of game that Xavier Prep coach Rachael
D’Angelo was hoping for, and her lacrosse team was happy to oblige.
According to D’Angelo, the Gators had “their best effort by
far’’ in a 17-9 home victory over previously unbeaten Phoenix Desert Vista on
Wednesday night (March 16).
Everything fell into place for Xavier. The Gators had good
scoring, passing, aggressiveness and quickness on defense with Megan Dedinsky and
solid play in goal from Savannah Fatigoni.
Xavier raised its record to 4-2 and Desert Vista dropped to
4-1.
“We played awesome. We are starting to jell,’’ said D’Angelo,
in her first season.
The Gators and Thunder traded a couple of goals apiece in
the first 12 minutes of the first half.
Xavier then took control with six straight goals for an 8-2
lead and had a 9-4 advantage at the half.
Every time it appeared that Desert Vista would gain some
traction, Xavier would pull away again.
Xavier had a 17-6 lead with 4:48 left in the game, creating
the use of a running clock, but the Thunder scored three in a row to make it
17-9.
Kayla Swanson had five goals for the Gators and Caylie
Wagner also had a big night with four goals. Sarah Minton had three goals,
Katie Hobaica had two, Bella Johnson two
and Alexa Wear one.
Xavier’s next game is on March 23 against Chandler Hamilton.
The contest begins at 7:30 p.m. at Chandler Prep, corner of Alma School and
Warner.
