Gators excel in Meet of Champions season finale

Xavier Prep senior distance runner Tessa Weiss continued her late-season excellence on Thursday (May 12), picking up a victory in the 1,600-meter run at the Meet of Champions on the Brophy Prep track.
Weiss, who earned titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 at the recent Division I state meet, won on Thursday with a time of 4:58.09.
State cross country champion Sarah Carter (junior) finished fourth in the event at 5:07.02 and Helen Innes (freshman) was sixth at 5:19.23. Carter’s time was her season best. Innes set a personal record.
Another senior who finished with a flourish was Cydeni Carter, who was second in the 100-meter hurdles and improved on her Xavier Top Ten mark (fourth) with a time of 15.57.
Junior Annie Grant also had strong performances in the 300-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. Grant was third in the 300 at 46.40 and set a personal record in the 200 with a fifth-place finish at 26.82.
In other track and field news, some of the Xavier athletes were ranked among the Top 10 in Division I events during the season, according to MaxPreps.
They included Grant at 45.42 in the 300 hurdles (seventh) and 9th at 15.40 in the 100 hurdles (ninth). Weiss’ top times were 4:57.90 in the 1,600 (second), 10:57.23 in the 3,200 (sixth) and 2:15.50 in the 800 (seventh).
Senior Teresa Roessler had a leap of 17-6 in the long jump (10th).
And XCP had strong showings in relay events. The Gators were at 9:37.82 in the 4x800 (second), 49.12 in the 4x100 (eighth) and 4:03.50 in the 4x400 (10th).
