State track and field on Wednesday, Saturday

Xavier Prep’s track and field athletes are ready to see if their hard work throughout the season will pay off when they participate in this week’s Division I state meet.
Mesa Community College once again will be the site of the event. Preliminaries are Wednesday (May 4), with finals on Saturday (May 7).
Prelims in the field events begin Wednesday at 1:15 p.m. and the next round is Saturday at 1 p.m. Running events begin at 3 p.m. on both days.
Xavier is coming off an impressive win in the recent 16-team Northeast Valley Regional.
The Gators are strong in the relays and the distance events. Noteworthy distance runners are senior Tessa Weiss, junior Sarah Carter, senior Shannan Higgins and sophomore Caroline McClelland.
Senior Cydeni Carter finished second in the 100-meter hurdles at the Northeast Regional. Junior Annie Grant was third in the 300-meter hurdles and senior Teresa Roessler won the long jump.
