Badminton enduring challenging week

It has been the biggest challenge for Susan Contreras as the first-year badminton coach at Xavier Prep.
“This is a tough week for us,’’ she said after Wednesday’s (Sept. 21) 9-0 victory over visiting Phoenix Horizon that put the Gators’ record at 10-0.
“We have three matches this week (Scottsdale Desert Mountain, Horizon and Chandler Hamilton), plus an invitational (at Phoenix Sunnyslope).
“We need to step up our game. This is the type of situation we are going to face in the state tournament. Back to back matches and days, both singles and doubles. You have to prepare mentally and physically.’’
The players have responded well, Contreras said, to her efforts in guiding them this season.
Xavier plays at Hamilton on Friday (Sept. 23) and competes in the Sunnyslope tournament on Saturday (Sept. 24). The junior varsity defeated Horizon 8-1.
