Gator volleyball rallies to defeat Gilbert High

Xavier Prep’s volleyball team emerged unscathed in its biggest test of the early season.
The Gators went to Gilbert High on Tuesday night (Sept.6) and earned a 3-2 victory over the Tigers.
Ranked third among 6A Conference teams by on Sept. 3, the Gators (3-0) won the first game against Gilbert, 25-17, then dropped the next two, 25-22 and 25-16. XCP rebounded with a 25-20 win in the fourth game and defeated the sixth-ranked Tigers 15-13 in the decisive fifth game.
Junior outside hitter Lanie Wagner came up with some big hits with a .303 hitting percentage and a team-high 14 kills. Sophomore libero Ashley Yeung led the Gators with 21 digs.
Senior Cierra Flood had 12 digs, senior Grace Morrison put the Tigers away with a match-winning kill. Sophomore Alexis Diaz-Infante came off the bench with a pair of kills and two blocks in the fourth and fifth games. And sophomore setter Shannon Shields had 37 assists.
Flood’s performance came on the heels of Friday’s (Sept. 2) commitment to play sand volleyball at Arizona State. Flood has helped Xavier win all four state titles in each of the sports years of existence.
The Gators return to action on Thursday (Sept. 8), this time at Boulder Creek in Anthem.
