It was good to be back at the Activity Center for Xavier
Prep’s volleyball team on Thursday night (Sept. 1) with the Gators’ 2016-17 home
opener.
Xavier, which had swept Mesa Mountain View on the road on
Tuesday night (Aug. 30), came up with another sweep in this one, 25-18, 25-21
and 25-15 over Goodyear Millennium. Xavier was ranked No. 3 in the new 6A
Conference in the preseason by azcentral.com
and Millennium was eighth.
The Gators had things under control in the first game, but
fell behind in the early stages of the second game. XCP ralled later on for the
win.
“We were compounding error after error in that second game,
but the girls fought back,’’ said coach Lamar-Renee Bryant.
“We served well, and when you do that, you can really set
the pace.’’
Bryant mentioned a few standouts – junior outside hitter
Lanie Wagner for her all-around game, senior Emma Cisneros-Luebke at libero,
and senior middle blockers Emma Gelinas and Grace Morrison for their defensive
work.
Xavier’s win in the second game allowed Bryant to try
different lineup combinations in the third game.
“We are very pleased with where we are at, our development,
at this stage of the season,’’ Bryant said.
Xavier has two road matches next week – Tuesday (Sept. 6) at
Gilbert High and Thursday (Sept. 8) at Anthem Boulder Creek.
