Everything went according to plan for Xavier Prep’s volleyball team.
The Gators earned the Pool D title in Friday’s (Sept. 30) opening
round of the Nike Tournament of Champions at the Kroc Center in Phoenix and
will move on to play Mercy, Ky., in their first match of the day on Saturday
(Oct. 1) at 11:45 a.m.
Xavier swept its six games against its three pool opponents.
The opponents were St. Mary’s Lancaster (N.Y.), Goodyear Millennium and The
Bishop’s School (La Jolla, Calif.).
The Gators defeated St. Mary’s Lancaster, 25-12 and 25-9.
Next came a 25-14, 25-21 triumph over Millennium. Following that was a 25-15,
25-21 win over The Bishop’s School.
Mercy went 2-1 in Pool C, winning five of eight games. Mercy’s
loss was to Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.), which defeated Xavier in the
title match of the recent Durango Classic in Las Vegas.
Xavier enters Saturday’s play with an 18-2 overall record.
