Gator golf finishes second in Antigua tourney

All in all, it wasn’t a bad weekend for the Xavier Prep golf team.
The Gators overcame a few challenges in Friday’s (Sept. 9) first round of the Antigua National High School Invitational at McCormick Ranch Golf Course in Scottsdale, then climbed from fourth place to a second-place finish in Saturday’s (Sept. 10) second and final round.
The individual portion of the seven-year event was even better for XCP.
Freshman Ashley Menne earned medalist honors with a 72-73 – 145 and senior Emily Mahar was closed behind in the No. 2 spot with a 72-75 – 147.
Chandler Hamilton won the team title with a 601. Xavier, which trailed the Huskies by 14 shots after the first day, matched Hamilton’s total on Saturday with a 306 to finish at 615.

“It was nice to take second after the way we started out,’’ said Xavier co-coach Sr. Lynn Winsor. “If we have good preparation, I think we can make up the difference at the state (6A Conference) tournament.’’
Added co-coach Tui Selvaratnam: “We are excited for the two of them (Menne and Mahar). Overall, this was a good test for us to see where we are. We are looking forward to state, but we all need to work harder.’’
It has been a busy season for the Gators thus far. They have played six regular matches (the most recent a win over Phoenix Horizon on Wednesday) and two invitationals.
Menne said “it was pretty cool to win, especially considering I am a freshman. I like playing on this team. I know most of the girls from the JGAA (Junior Golf Association of Arizona), and we play with a lot of confidence. And we are encouraged for state, for sure.’’
Mahar has enjoyed watching how Menne is playing.
“She is within herself. She knows her game and gets it done,’’ Mahar said.
As for her own game in the two days, Mahar said, “I think my drives were solid and long. I hit a lot of greens and that can make it easier. But nobody on our team played to their potential 100 percent. That is encouraging to know what we can do when we play our best.’’
Xavier has just one match during the coming week – against Phoenix Pinnacle at Phoenix Country Club on Wednesday (Sept. 14).
