Badminton has top seeds in state tourney

Good news for the Xavier Prep badminton team and its fans . . .
The Gators are the No. 1 seed in the Division I state team tournament that begins on Monday (Oct. 24). Xavier gets a first-round bye and will play at 6 p.m. against the winner of an earlier match between No. 8 Mesa Red Mountain and No. 9 Phoenix Horizon.
The Xavier match could start earlier if the match before it ends early.
A victory by Xavier on Monday would send the three-time defending state champion Gators (nine titles overall) to the semifinals on Wednesday (Oct. 26) at Phoenix Desert Vista in Ahwatukee. The championship match will be held at Phoenix Sunnyslope on Thursday (Oct. 27) with a 7:30 p.m. start time.
Team tournament seeds are Xavier (1), Gilbert Perry (2), Mesa Skyline (3), Glendale Mountain Ridge (4), Desert Vista (5), Mesa Mountain View (6), Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor (7), Red Mountain (8), Horizon (9), Tempe Corona del Sol (10), Phoenix Pinnacle (11) and Phoenix Central (12).
The state individual singles and doubles will take place on Friday (Oct. 21) and Saturday (Oct. 22) at Glendale Independence. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. both days.
More good news on the Xavier front for singles and doubles . . .
The Xavier team of Emily Woodrow and Kiana Valentova-Macdonald is the top seed in doubles. A second XCP doubles team, Tatum Clarke and Annie Kamps, is seeded sixth.
Woodrow and Valentova-Macdonald will meet Anthem Boulder Creek’s Lauren Calabrese and Jessica Rausch. Clarke and Kamps will face Red Mountain’s Janae Ziebel and Monica Flores.
The Gators’ Maddie Reinhart is entered in singles play, and will meet Horizon’s Jorey Cohen in her first match.
