Good news for the Xavier Prep badminton team and its fans .

The Gators are the No. 1 seed in the Division I state team
tournament that begins on Monday (Oct. 24). Xavier gets a first-round bye and
will play at 6 p.m. against the winner of an earlier match between No. 8 Mesa
Red Mountain and No. 9 Phoenix Horizon.
The Xavier match could start earlier if the match before it
ends early.
A victory by Xavier on Monday would send the three-time
defending state champion Gators (nine titles overall) to the semifinals on
Wednesday (Oct. 26) at Phoenix Desert Vista in Ahwatukee. The championship
match will be held at Phoenix Sunnyslope on Thursday (Oct. 27) with a 7:30 p.m.
start time.
Team tournament seeds are Xavier (1), Gilbert Perry (2),
Mesa Skyline (3), Glendale Mountain Ridge (4), Desert Vista (5), Mesa Mountain
View (6), Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor (7), Red Mountain (8), Horizon (9), Tempe
Corona del Sol (10), Phoenix Pinnacle (11) and Phoenix Central (12).
The state individual singles and doubles will take place on
Friday (Oct. 21) and Saturday (Oct. 22) at Glendale Independence. Matches will
begin at 10 a.m. both days.

The Xavier team of Emily Woodrow and Kiana
Valentova-Macdonald is the top seed in doubles. A second XCP doubles team,
Tatum Clarke and Annie Kamps, is seeded sixth.
Woodrow and Valentova-Macdonald will meet Anthem Boulder
Creek’s Lauren Calabrese and Jessica Rausch. Clarke and Kamps will face Red
Mountain’s Janae Ziebel and Monica Flores.
The Gators’ Maddie Reinhart is entered in singles play, and
will meet Horizon’s Jorey Cohen in her first match.
