Gator volleyball earns third straight sweep

Xavier Prep’s volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a dominating sweep of visiting Chandler High on Thursday night (Oct. 20). Scores were 25-10, 25-13 and 25-15.
It was the third sweep in as many nights for the Gators (31-6), who disposed of Chandler Basha and Gilbert Perry earlier in the week.
Xavier has just one more match during the regular season, and that will be at the Activity Center on Tuesday night (Oct. 25) against Chandler Hamilton. The Gators fell to Hamilton in four sets on Oct. 5 at Hamilton.
Xavier finished off the first set with a 9-3 run. For the decisive point, senior middle blocker Makena Patterson appeared as if she would hammer the ball home for a kill, but instead changed her mind in midair and placed the softer shot in the middle of the Chandler side before anyone could respond.
The Gators scored the first six points of the second game and maintained a comfortable advantage the rest of the way.
XCP wrapped up the third game and the match when sophomore Trinity Cavanaugh scored a kill from deep on the Gators’ side. They had a good display of powerful swings most of the night, many provided by Patterson and senior outside hitter Grace Morrison.
In a pre-match ceremony, the team’s six seniors were honored. They are Emma Cisneros-Luebke, Kristen Klein, Patterson, Emma Gelinas, Cierra Flood and Morrison.
