Led by seniors, Gators finish unbeaten regular season

Thursday (Oct. 6) was Senior Day for the Xavier Prep badminton team, and the Gators rolled to a 9-0 win over Chandler Basha in their last home match of the regular season.
Xavier finished with a 14-0 regular-season record under first-year coach Sue Contreras and is expected to be the No. 1 seed in the state tournament.
XCP’s four seniors all won their singles matches by double 11-0 scores. The honorees were Tatum Clarke, Emily Woodrow, Annie Kamps and Kiana Valentova-Macdonald.
The Gators will get a chance to rest up a little and practice a little as they prepare for the individual portion of the tournament. That will be held Oct. 21-22 at Glendale Independence.
The team portion of the tournament will begin Oct. 24 with first and second rounds at the sites of the highest seeds. Xavier is expected to be one of those host schools.
The semifinals and finals will be held Oct. 26 and 27, respectively, at Phoenix Desert Vista in Ahwatukee.
Basha’s Bears gave it all they had against the Gators, but inexperience showed as some of the replacements for the main varsity players were overwhelmed. Some varsity players were not available due to fall break.
