If Xavier Prep’s Gators are to win their sixth straight
big-school golf championship and 34th overall, they are going to
have to work for it.
They had their hands full on Wednesday (Nov. 2) in the
opening round of the state tournament at the Aguila Golf Course in Laveen,
holding off Chandler Hamilton by two shots. The event resumes Thursday (Nov. 3)
with the Gators teeing off at approximately 9 a.m. at Aguila.
Freshman Ashley Menne and senior Elizabeth Caldarelli led
the way for XCP, sharing the first-round lead with a 70.
Emily Mahar shot a 71 to land in fourth place. Sisters Lily
Worden and Eve Worden shot 82 and 85, respectively.
Menne is displaying the skills that allowed her to earn the
Junior Golf Association of Arizona Girls Player of the Year award. She won 12
tournaments during the association’s season and finished in the top three in 19
of 21 events.
