The good news for Xavier Prep’s basketball team was the
return of junior forward Montana Oltrogge to the lineup on Tuesday night (Jan.
31) after missing several games with a leg injury.
However, the outcome against host Chandler Hamilton wasn’t
so good.
Xavier came out with aggressive play at both ends of the
floor to remain within four points at the end of the first quarter, but went
cold in the second quarter with only two points.
Hamilton took advantage and pulled away for a 67-48 victory.
The Huskies, who won the Division I championship last
season, swept the two-game 6A Conference Premier Division series with Xavier and
raised its overall record to 22-3. Hamilton was the No. 2 team (behind Gilbert
High) in the Arizona Interscholastic Association rankings released on Wednesday
(Feb. 1).
Xavier, meanwhile, slipped to 18-6 overall and was eighth in
the rankings.
The Gators will finish out the regular season with two home
games, on Friday (Feb. 3) against Phoenix Pinnacle and on Feb. 7 against
Phoenix St. Mary’s.
All Xavier could muster in the second quarter was an early
bucket by forward Katie Hassett. The junior also had her hands full on defense,
trying to stop Hamilton post player Maya Banks.
Oltrogge scored eight of her team-high 19 points in the
third quarter, but the Gators could not cut into the Huskies’ lead. Oltrogge
connected for three 3-point baskets in the game.
Sophomore guard Paris Moore chipped in with 12 points,
including six free throws.
