Xavier Prep opened its softball season by splitting two
games in Thursday’s (Feb. 23) opening round of the Sunrise Mountain
Invitational at Rio Vista Park in Peoria.
In the opener against Glendale Raymond S. Kellis, the Gators
smacked the ball all over the field for a 15-2 victory. The key inning was the
fourth, when XCP scored nine runs.
Senior outfielder Annamarie Hartman led the way with four
hits in five at-bats, with five RBIs and three runs scored. One of her hits was
a home run.
Jordan Barrett, Melissa Fedorka and Macrina Zachar each
drove in a pair of runs, Barrett with three hits and the others with two.
And junior Mercedes Silva looked strong in her pitching
debut, giving up just two hits, walking none and striking out five.
In the second game, Xavier went down to the wire before
falling to Surprise Shadow Ridge 6-5. Details were unavailable.
Day Two of the tournament is Friday (Feb. 24), with Xavier
scheduled to play Peoria Centennial at 4 p.m. The Gators also are due to play on
Saturday (Feb. 25).
