XCP tennis players earn sweep in first three rounds

Wow, what a weekend for Xavier Prep tennis !
The Gators came through with three victories apiece in their singles competition and two doubles competitions in the Division I individual tournament on Friday (April 21) and Saturday (April 22) at the Gene Autry complex in east Mesa.
All XCP players advanced to the quarterfinals on April 28 at 3:30 p.m. at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.
Freshman Erica Stutz, the No. 4 seed, carried the banner in singles. In Friday’s first two matches, she defeated Mesa Skyline’s Hanna Schwuchow 6-1, 6-0 and Phoenix Desert Vista’s Alex Palmer 6-1, 6-0. Stutz came back to put away Surprise Shadow Mountain’s Kristen Stallons 6-0, 6-1, on Saturday.
In the quarterfinals, Stutz will face fifth-seeded Gabriela Lawlor of Goodyear Millennium. Semifinals and finals are on April 29 at Paseo.
Senior Jordan Craft and freshman Emily Even are seeded third in doubles.
In their first match on Friday, they defeated Mikayla Wason and Aunit Furman of Anthem Boulder Creek 6-1, 6-0, and in the second match of the day defeated Karen Alvarez and Jordan White of Laveen Cesar Chavez 6-0, 6-1.
Moving on to Saturday, Craft and Even emerged victorious again against Emma Wheeler and Sara Williams of Mesa Mountain View 6-2, 6-2.
Craft and Even will meet No.6 seed Mikenna DeBruin and Liz Smith of Chandler Hamilton.
The second Xavier doubles team is junior Maddy Corley and freshman Jessica Miramelli. Although they are unseeded, they helped the Gators record a clean sweep over the first two days.
Corley and Miramelli opened with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Glendale Apollo’s Craignertene Nyrrinda and Layla Phillips on Friday. In the second round, the XCP pair downed Tucson Rincon/University’s Reia Li and Ren Daubert 6-3, 6-2.
On Saturday, Corley and Miramelli defeated No. 8 seeded Jocelyn Zhu and Maria Manaog of Tempe Corona del Sol 6-2, 6-0.
Corley and Miramelli will have a tough task in the quarterfinal, meeting top-seeded Grace Koester and Erin Hannen of Scottsdale Chaparral.
The team portion of the Division I tournament begins on Tuesday (April 25). State runner-up Xavier is seeded fifth and will play host to No. 12 Goodyear Millennium at 3 p.m. If Xavier wins, it would move on to the quarterfinals on May 2.
If No. 4 Phoenix Desert Vista defeats No. 13 Anthem Boulder Creek in the opening round, Xavier would play its quarter on the road. If Boulder Creek pulls the upset, it would have to come to Xavier.
