Gators ready for summer hoops playoffs

Xavier Prep’s basketball team, which began the Thunderbird (High) Summer League with a loss and then reeled off six straight wins, is ready to go when the league playoffs get under way on Saturday (June 24).
Xavier will open play against Scottsdale Saguaro at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the school’s main gym. If the Gators win, they would play the Phoenix Arcadia “A’’ team on Sunday (June 25) at 6 p.m. in the main gym.
Semifinals and finals are on Monday (June 26) at 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
The Gators and coach Jen Gillom will face a big challenge in the playoffs. A handful of the team’s top players will be absent due to club-team commitments.
Gillom is not as worried as one might think.
She used many of her reserves in a 64-36 win over the Thunderbird Orange team in the last regular game.
“They did a pretty good job,’’ she said. “They know they will be counted on to do more, so they will have to step up. And it is good to give them that type of experience.’’
