The Gators
produced a decisive victory in their opening match for 2017, outdistancing
Scottsdale Desert Mountain by 43 strokes on Tuesday (Aug. 22) at their Phoenix
Country Club home.
Sophomore
Ashley Menne, the co-medalist at last year’s state tournament won by XCP, also
was medalist in this one with a three-under-par 33 on the warm afternoon.
Xavier’s team score was 138, with 181 for Desert Mountain.
Other Xavier
first-group scores: Eve Worden 34, Bre Matthews 34, Bailey Tayles 37, Mary Beth
Doss 40.
“The first match
of the season, there’s always a lot going on,’’ said Xavier co-head coach Tui
Selvaratnam. “The girls did a good job focusing on what they needed to do. It
was a strong effort by everybody.’’
The Gators
are back on the course on Wednesday (Aug. 23), traveling to face Anthem Boulder
Creek at the Anthem Country Club. Xavier’s first tournament of the season comes
on Friday (Aug. 25) and Saturday (Aug. 26), the Nighthawk Invite at the Omni
Tucson National course. It also will be the site of this year’s state
tournament.
