Gator golfers win tourney by 14 shots

Xavier Prep’s golf team produced another signature performance on Friday (Sept. 1) and Saturday (Sept. 2) by outplaying 17 other schools to win the annual Antigua Invitational.

After playing for several years at the McCormick Ranch Golf Course in Scottsdale, the event moved to the Whirlwind courses at the Wild Horse Pass resort in Chandler this year.

Xavier scored a 587, 11 over par, to defeat the Punahou (Hawaii) Blue team by 14 shots (601). Chandler Hamilton, Xavier’s Division I rival, finished third, 16 behind at 603.

Xavier now has won the Antigua tournament three times, finished second twice and third once.

Sophomore Ashley Menne was the Gators’ top individual, finishing second with a 69-71 for a 4-under par 140. Scottsdale Chaparral’s Kelly Su was the tournament medalist at 69-68-137.

Xavier tees off again on Tuesday (Sept. 5) with a home match against Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor at the Phoenix Country Club. Start time is 3 p.m. And another tournament looms for the Gators on Thursday (Sept. 7), the Aguila Invite at the Aguila Golf Course in Laveen.
