Hard work pays off for golf medalist Cons

State championships are grand, but it is moments like these that warm a coach’s heart.

Xavier Prep golf coach and athletic director Sr. Lynn Winsor had watched junior Emily Cons gain maturity through the early part of the season and on Wednesday (Sept. 27), it paid off.

Cons shot a 3-under-par 33 to earn medalist honors as Xavier defeated Tempe Corona del Sol 153-192 in the Gators’ final match at Phoenix Country Club. Xavier will have one, possibly two more “home’’ matches at Camelback Golf Club. The team is due to play Phoenix Horizon on Oct. 4.

“We are very proud of Emily. She did a great job,’’ Winsor said. “She has worked very hard to break into the top group. And we are proud of all our girls who played today.’’

Cons said that her approach shots and putts were working for her.

“I have been practicing the short game and putting,’’ she said.

Her best hole, she said, was on No. 1.

“I got my third shot really close to the pin,’’ she said.

“I have been playing pretty well. I have not been focusing on the score so much as playing the best I can, one (hole) by one.’’

Others in the team-scoring group were freshman Bailee Tayles 37, junior Laura Lu 40, freshman Mary Doss 43 and sophomore Danae Bravo 51.

Xavier had five more golfers participate. They were sophomore Millburn Ho 34, junior Eve Worden 37, sophomore Breyana Matthews 38, freshman Lauren Garcia 40 and junior Holly Otlewski 43.
