Xavier doubles team reaches badminton semis

The first day of the Division I state badminton individual singles and doubles tournament is in the books after play on Friday (Oct. 20), and Xavier Prep had one of its two doubles teams reach today’s (Oct. 21) semifinals.

The second-seeded doubles team of Maddie Reinhart and Alexa Wolfson began the day with a 15-0, 15-8 victory over Mesa Mountain View’s Brooklyn Heywood and Tatum Monk.

Next came Gilbert Highland’s Abi Cluff and Heather Larsen and the Xavier duo again emerged victorious, 15-4, 15-0.

In the quarterfinal, Reinhart and Wolfson defeated Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor’s Kirsten Norris and Rebecca Felton 15-12, 15-3, to advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. semifinal against Gilbert Perry’s unseeded duo of Megan Crow and Kylie Goldberg.

The winner of the semifinal match would move on to the final match between either top-seeded Jordan Pierson and Jessica Read of Perry or No. 4 Ana Munoz and Michaela Daas of Mesa Skyline. The losers of the semifinal matches would meet for the tournament’s consolation championship.

Xavier’s other doubles team of Misaal Irfan and Rebecca Ryan was unseeded and fell to Pierson and Read, 15-12, 15-1 in the first round.

Xavier also had an unseeded singles player, Mimi Zurbriggen, and she won her first-round match, 11-6, 11-3 over Chandler High’s Alana Alfredo. Zurbriggen gave it a good effort against Mesa Red Mountain’s fifth-seeded Abby Mann in the second round but fell short, 11-6, 11-8.
