Xavier volleyball well aware of task at hand

Xavier Prep’s volleyball team came out very focused against visiting Chandler Hamilton on Wednesday night (Oct. 4) and rolled to a 3-0 sweep of the Huskies. Scores were 25-12, 25-16 and 25-14.

Senior outside hitter Lanie Wagner led the way with 15 kills and four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Bri McKnight had 13 kills and two service aces, junior setter Shannon Shields had a balanced effort with six kills, two aces and three blocks, and senior middle blocker Alexis Diaz-Infante had five blocks.

The Gators have a quick turnaround and are due to play another home match on Thursday night (Oct. 5), this time against Mesa Desert Ridge. Start time is 6 p.m.

Xavier’s third tournament of the season will come on Friday (Oct. 6) and Saturday (Oct. 7), the Gilbert Invitational at Gilbert High. The round-robin event will have eight teams, which will play seven matches over the two days. Match format will be the best-of-three instead of the normal best-of-five.

9 a.m. – Chandler Basha. 11 a.m. – Phoenix Sunnyslope. 2 p.m. – Tempe Corona del Sol. 4 p.m. – Gilbert Highland.

Saturday, Oct. 7

9 a.m. – Gilbert High. Noon – Phoenix Mountain Pointe. 1 p.m. – Chandler Hamilton.
