Gators' pressure too much for Mountain View

It doesn’t happen very often, but sometimes a basketball coach would like to build a big enough lead to use the entire roster in a game.

That luxury was presented to Xavier Prep’s Jennifer Gillom on Tuesday night (Dec. 5) at Mesa Mountain View.

Thirteen of the 15 players listed on the Gators’ roster scored and XCP rolled to an 87-26 victory over the Toros. A running clock was used in the fourth quarter.

Xavier’s record improved to 5-3, and the Gators have a quick turnaround on Wednesday (Dec. 6), playing host to Glendale Mountain Ridge at the Activity Center. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

Xavier scored the first nine points of the game before Mountain View (4-4) called a timeout. Shortly thereafter, the Toros would score their only points of the first quarter, and by the start of the second, Xavier had a 29-2 lead.

The Gators stuck to their pattern of recent games by putting pressure on the Mountain View guards, and the Toros could not handle it.

Senior forward Montana Oltrogge took over for the Gators in the second quarter, scoring 13 of her game-high 21 points, including a pair of 3-point baskets.

Xavier outscored the Toros 16-2 over the first 3:43 of the third quarter, leaving no doubt in regard to the game’s outcome.

From that point on, Gillom was able to give her reserves some playing time.

Junior point guard Leilani McIntosh scored 15 points, including a 3-pointer, and junior wing player Addison Putnam scored 11, including a 3-pointer.
